Ethiopia

churches and monasteries in the landscape
3 to 18 November 2012

Ethiopia offers a peaceful welcome to visitors who'll find a great deal to interest them. The development of Christianity has led to a rich history of the churches and monasteries: these will form the theme of our journey through a very beautiful and varied landscape from the Blue Nile to the Ethiopian Highlands, from the capital Addis Ababa to Gheralta close to the border with Eritrea. Our journey will take us from the intriguing rock-cut churches in Lalibela, to the 17th century capital at Gonder, before we head north to Axum with its fascinating obelisks and rich history of the Queen of Sheba and Solomon. The tour ends with a few days in Gheralta with its less visited and spectacular monasteries. During this journey most of the churches and monasteries are reasonably accessible but there are a few, especially in Gheralta which are harder to reach. The tour is accompanied by Rufus Reade.
